Briefing of Relations between China and Fiji

I. Bilateral Political Relations
On November 5, 1975, China and Fiji established diplomatic relations. In recent years, high-level exchanges between the two sides were: Xu Jialu, the vice chairman of National People's Congress (in 2005), Wen Jiabao, the Premier of State Council (in April 2006), and Li Zhaoxing, the Foreign Minister (in August 2006) visited Fiji respectively; Jia Qinglin, the Chairman of CPPCC (in 2005) and Zeng Qinghong, the Vice President (in 2005) respectively passed through the territory of Fiji. Fiji President Iloilo (in 2003), Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase (in 2002, 2004 and 2005), Senate President Waqavakatoga (in 2003), Foreign Minister Tavola (in 2001, 2002 and 2003) and the interim government Foreign Minister Nailatikou (in August 2007) visited China respectively.

II. Cooperation in Tourism
In October 2004, a Memorandum of Understanding regarding tourism plan from China to Fiji was signed by China and Fiji. In May 2005, Chinese citizens officially toured in Fiji.

III. Cooperation in Culture
Since the diplomatic relations has been established, China has sent a number of delegations of martial arts, acrobatic troupe visiting Fiji. In January 2003, the activity of China Week was held in the capital of Fiji, and Tianjin Acrobatic Troupe made a performance. In October 2004, Wuhan Acrobatic Troupe performed in Fiji.

IV. Cooperation in Education
In 1984, China provided scholarship quotas for Fiji students who study in China. In academic year of 2007/2008, China provided 14 quotas of scholarship to Fiji students. At present, there are two teachers working in Fiji Yat Sen Secondary School.
