I. Bilateral Political Relations China established diplomatic relations with the Federated States of Micronesia on Sep. 11, 1989 and found its embassy at Feb. of 1990. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, each president of Micronesia had visited China including President Haglelgam (in November 1990), President Barley Olter (in September 1992), President Leo Falcarm (in March 2000) and President Joseph J.Urusemal which visited China twice (in March 2004 for national affairs and in April 2006 for Annual Conference of Boao Forum for Asia). In Dec. 2007, President Emanuel Mori visited China for national affairs owing to invitation of Chinese President of Hu Jintao. Other important visits from F.S. Micronesia include: Deputy President Redley Killion (in Oct. 2002 and July 2006), Speaker of Congress Hon Peter M. Christian with congress representatives (in Oct. 2005), Minister of Foreign Affairs Anefal ( in Feb. 2006), Chairman of Foreign Affairs Committee of Congress Alik( in Oct. 2006) and Deputy Speaker Philip( in Nov. 2006).
Activities visiting Micronesia from the Chinese side in current years include: Deputy Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs Zhou Wenchong and Yang Jiechi visited F.S Micronesia in Feb. and Nov of 2005. Deputy Director of Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Ji Peiding visited F.S Micronesia in May 2006. Minister of Foreign Affairs Li Zhaoxing visited Micronesia in July 2006. Assistant to Minister of Ministry of Foreign Affairs He Yafei visited Micronesia to attend the swearing-in ceremony of President, Vice President and the 15th Congress members of F.S. Micronesia in July 2007. Vice-chairman of National People's Congress Committee Jiang Zhenghua visited Micronesia in September 2007.
II. Cooperation in Tourism In April 2006, President Wen Jiabao has approved the Federated States of Micronesia as outbound tourism destination of Chinese citizens in the first Economic Development Cooperation Forum between China and Pacific Island Countries. In May 2008, both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding tourism plan from China to the Federated States of Micronesia.
III. Cooperation in Education From the year 1992 to 2005, 11 students from the Federated States of Micronesia came to study in China with scholarship provided by Chinese government. China separately provided 15 and 12 quotas of scholarship for F.S Micronesia in the year of 2006 and 2007 respectively. China dispatched a Chinese language teacher to Micronesia in 2006.

V. F.S Micronesia Ambassador to China In April 2007, the Federated States of Micronesia founded its embassy in China and appointed Carlson Apis as the ambassador and temporary charge. In Dec. 2007, President Emanuel Mori attended the opening ceremony of Micronesia embassy during his visit in China. The current Micronesian ambassador to China Mr. Kasio Mida served concurrently as its ambassador to Japan. |
