Briefing of Relations between China and Papua New Guinea

I.Bilateral Political Relations
China and Papua New Guinea established diplomatic relations on October 12, 1976. In November 1980, China set up embassy in Papua New Guinea, and in 1988, Papua Guinea established embassy in China.

In recent years, the relations between the two countries have developed steadily and the main top-level leaders have visited each other frequently. In February 2004, Michael Somare, the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea visited China, and the two countries issued the Joint Press Communique. In September 2005, Xu Jialu, vice-chairman of NPC Standing Committee, attended the 30th anniversary independent celebration of Papua New Guinea. In October 2006, Paulias Matane, the new governor-general of Papua New Guinea, visited China; President Hu Jintao and Chairman of CPPCC, Jia Qinglin, met him respectively. In March 2007, Vice Premier Zeng Peiyan visited Papua New Guinea.

Since 2003, President Hu Jintao and Prime Minister Michael Somare have met each other at the informal leadership meeting held during the APEC. In April 2005, President Hu met Prime Minister Somare in Jakarta when attending the Asian-African summit meeting. In April 2006, Premier Wen Jiabao met Prime Minister Somare during the 1st ministerial conference of China-Pacific Island Countries Economic Development and Cooperation Forum.

II. Cooperation in Tourism
In April 2006, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao approved the Papua New Guinea as the outbound tourism destination of Chinese citizens in the opening ceremony of ministerial conference of 1st China-Pacific Island Countries Economic Development and Cooperation Forum. In November 2007, China and Papua New Guinea signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding tourism plan from China to Papua New Guinea.

III. Cooperation in Education
Since establishment of diplomatic relations of China and Papua New Guinea, PNU has sent 25 students studying in China, with11 in 2006.
