Briefing of Relations between China and Samoa

I.Bilateral Political Relations
China and Samoa established diplomatic relations on November 6, 1975. In October 1976, China set up embassy in Samoa. The relations between the two countries have developed smoothly during the 32 years.

In May 2005, Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa visited China, and the two sides issued the Joint Declaration, pointing out the direction of development for the friendly and cooperative relations between China and Samoa in the 21st century. In July 2006, Tuu'u, Samoan Minister of Revenue, visited China with Human Rights Protection Party, and another five ministers and officials also came to China to attend the meeting. In March 2007, and Samoa Prime Minister Tuilaepa visited China; in June of the same year, Tolofuaivalelei, the Samoan Parliamentary Speaker informally visited China.

In April 2007, Li Changchun and Wu Guanzheng, Standing Committee member of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, visited and stopped in Samoa respectively. In May, Wang Yongqiu, the Chinese special envoy of dialogue of China - Pacific Islands Forum, attended King Malietoa Tanumafili II’s funeral as the special envoy of Chinese Government.

II. Cooperation in Tourism
In April 2006, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao approved Samoa as the outbound tourism destination of Chinese citizens in the opening ceremony of ministerial conference of 1st China-Pacific Island Countries Economic Development and Cooperation Forum.

III. Cooperation in Culture
In 2000 and 2002, the Hunan and Hebei Acrobatic Troupes respectively visited Samoa and gave performances. In the late May and early June of 2007, Liaoning Acrobatic and Folk Orchestra Troupe participated in the 45th anniversary of independent celebration of Samoa.

IV. Cooperation in Education
In 1984, China sent two teachers to teach in Samoa for two years. In 2002 China sent a Chinese language teacher to teach Chinese in National University of Samoa. China provided government scholarships annually for Samoan students for studying in China since 1982. In academic year of 2007/2008, there were a total of 17 Samoan students with scholarships studying in China.
