I.Bilateral Trade Relations According to the statistics of Chinese Customs, the trade volume of China and Pacific island countries (13 countries and Niue has no trade statistics) in 2007 was USD1.53b, up by 24.4% year-on-year. Among them, China imported USD660m from the Pacific island countries, up by 26.9%, and exported USD870m to the Pacific island countries, up by 22.5%.
From January to May in 2008, the trade volume among China and Pacific island countries was USD810m, with an increase of 8%. Among them, China imported USD400m from the Pacific island countries, up by 21%, and exported USD410m to the Pacific island countries, down by 2%.
The main imports of China from the Pacific island countries are fisheries products and wood, and the main exports of China to the Pacific island countries are electromechanical products and light textile products.
II. Chinese Investment in the Pacific Island Countries By the end of 2007, the non-financial direct investment of China to the Pacific island countries was USD310m. The investment mainly concentrated in the fields of resources development, fisheries, aviation and construction services.
III. Economic and Technological Cooperation By the end of 2007, the contracts of project contracting and labor service cooperation signed by China and the Pacific island countries amounted to USD2.57b, with completed turnover of USD1.59b. |
